The Protocol

How the free mold toxin test works

Four steps, all in your browser. The free VCS test plus a symptom questionnaire, with nothing to install, no account, and no kit in the post.

01

Calibrate Your Screen

A 3-step calibration determines your screen's PPI and gamma — essential for displaying gratings at the correct contrast levels for valid testing.

02

Take the VCS Test

Test each eye independently. For each grating patch, identify the tilt direction (vertical, +15°, or −15°) or select "Can't See." Progress through 5 spatial frequencies × 9 contrast levels.

03

Complete the Questionnaire

Rate 51 questions across 9 domains — fatigue, cognition, pain, neurology, vision, respiratory, GI, autonomic function, and exposure history. Dual frequency×severity sliders.

04

Receive Your Report

Instant results: visual CSF curves, 13-cluster symptom analysis, exposure pattern identification, and personalized next steps with biomarker testing recommendations.

Features

What the mold toxicity test includes

The only tool combining calibrated VCS testing with comprehensive symptom mapping and pattern analysis.

Visual Contrast Sensitivity Test

The FACT-based VCS test measures contrast sensitivity at 5 spatial frequencies. Biotoxin-related deficits concentrate at 6 and 12 cycles per degree — the same test used by CIRS practitioners worldwide.

51-Question Symptom Assessment

Validated 13-cluster questionnaire covering all 37 Shoemaker-identified symptoms plus HPA axis, chemical sensitivity, and exposure history. Dual frequency×severity scoring for treatment tracking.

Pattern Analysis Report

Identifies likely exposure patterns — mold/mycotoxin, Lyme/tick-borne, post-viral, or heavy metal. Maps your symptoms to the biotoxin pathway and recommends targeted biomarker testing.

Screen Calibration

Built-in gamma correction and PPI calibration ensures your gratings are rendered at exactly the right spatial frequency and contrast — critical for valid at-home testing.

Treatment Tracking

Retake the test over time to track your visual contrast sensitivity and symptom burden. VCS responds to treatment within 2 weeks — making it a powerful monitoring tool.

Next Steps Guidance

Risk-stratified recommendations: routine monitoring, provider consultation, or specific laboratory tests (C4a, TGF-β1, MMP-9, MSH, VIP) based on your results.

The Science

Grounded in published research

The FACT (Functional Acuity Contrast Test) protocol was developed by Arthur P. Ginsburg, Ph.D. and validated by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker across tens of thousands of patients from 1997–2025.

Biotoxins cause VCS deficits through capillary hypoperfusion — C4a-driven vessel constriction reduces blood flow to the optic nerve within 24–36 hours of exposure, preferentially damaging magnocellular pathway neurons at mid-range spatial frequencies (6–12 cpd).

VCS deficits are rapidly reversible with treatment (~65% improvement within 2 weeks of cholestyramine therapy) and decline within 3–5 days of re-exposure — making this test a powerful monitoring tool throughout treatment.

Mold inhalation causes innate immune activation, neural, cognitive and emotional dysfunction

Harding CF, Pytte CL, Page KG, Ryberg KJ, Normand E, Remigio GJ, et al. · 2020

Controlled study showing that inhaled mold spores trigger innate immune activation in the hippocampus, reducing neurogenesis and impairing memory. It offers a mechanism for the cognitive and emotional symptoms people report after mold exposure, and it held for non-toxic spore fragments as well as toxic ones.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the VCS test?

The Visual Contrast Sensitivity (VCS) test measures your ability to detect fine visual patterns at different contrast levels. Biotoxins — including mold mycotoxins — impair the optic nerve's ability to process mid-range spatial frequencies (6–12 cycles per degree), producing a characteristic pattern of visual deficits. The VCS test has ~92% sensitivity for detecting CIRS-pattern illness and a <1% false positive rate in unexposed populations.

What is CIRS?

Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is an acquired inflammatory condition triggered by exposure to biotoxins from water-damaged buildings, tick bites, dinoflagellates, or other sources. In genetically susceptible individuals (~24% of the population), the immune system cannot clear biotoxins, leading to a self-perpetuating inflammatory cascade affecting virtually every body system.

Is this a medical diagnosis?

No. This is a wellness screening tool only and cannot diagnose any condition. Nothing on this site constitutes medical advice or creates a provider-patient relationship. A positive screening result means your results are consistent with patterns commonly seen in biotoxin-related illness — it does not confirm a diagnosis. Consult a qualified healthcare provider for any health concerns.

How accurate is the test?

When both the VCS test and symptom questionnaire are positive, the combined screening accuracy is 98.5% based on Shoemaker's clinical data across tens of thousands of patients. VCS alone achieves ~92% sensitivity with <1% false positive rate. False negatives are more common in teenagers, visual professionals (artists, photographers), and those with naturally high baseline contrast sensitivity.

What equipment do I need?

A computer, tablet, or phone with a reasonably modern screen (130+ PPI recommended), a quiet room with dim ambient lighting, and corrective glasses or contacts if you normally wear them. The built-in calibration process adjusts for your screen's specific gamma and PPI to ensure valid results.

What happens after the test?

You receive a detailed report showing your visual contrast sensitivity results (per-eye CSF curve), symptom cluster analysis, exposure risk profile, and pattern analysis. Risk-stratified next steps include suggested laboratory tests to discuss with a provider and links to practitioners trained in Shoemaker Protocol.

Can black mold make you sick?

Yes. Black mold, often Stachybotrys chartarum, produces mycotoxins that can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, fatigue, and cognitive symptoms such as brain fog. In genetically susceptible people (roughly 24% of the population), mold exposure can trigger Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), a self-perpetuating inflammatory illness affecting multiple body systems. The VCS test on this site screens for the neurological effects of biotoxin exposure.

How do I get rid of black mold?

Small patches under about 10 square feet on hard, non-porous surfaces can often be cleaned with proper protective equipment. Mold on drywall, or any area larger than roughly 10 square feet, usually requires removing the affected material and professional remediation. The most important step is fixing the moisture source first, because mold returns if the underlying water problem is not corrected.
